Simon Birch - Managing Director

With over 40 years of comprehensive experience in the construction industry, Simon is a seasoned leader in architectural practice. As the founding director and Managing Director of CBP Architects, he has played an instrumental role in the company’s growth and success since its inception in 2006.

Simon has a proven track record of developing and maintaining strong client relationships, particularly on large-scale residential and commercial projects, including high-rise HRB buildings. His strategic vision and leadership have been crucial in guiding the firm through complex projects, ensuring excellence in design and delivery.

Dedicated to driving business growth, Simon implements innovative strategies that enhance productivity and streamline operational processes. He is committed to staff development to promote continuous learning, skill development, and career progression within the Practice.

Ray Rudd-Senior Executive Director

Ray is a Chartered Senior Architectural Technologist, and Senior Associate with extensive experience across retail, residential, commercial office and education sectors, having joined CBP Architects in 2007. He has led projects ranging from £1m to £40m, including concept stores, warehousing, student accommodation, school and college expansions. Ray has developed strong expertise in educational design, master planning, and modern construction methods, with a solid understanding of DfE and Building Bulletin guidelines. He continues to contribute to CBP’s design reputation while maintaining professional development and supporting local initiatives like Nottingham Ambassadors.

Stephen Robinson – Senior Associate Director

Stephen has extensive expertise in delivering new-build and refurbishment projects across retail, hospitality, and multi-residential sectors. He has successfully led large-scale developments, working closely with clients and contractors to deliver designs that are both compliant and commercially aligned.

His technical expertise spans modern construction methodologies and sustainable design principles, supported by a portfolio featuring award-winning and high-risk residential schemes. In addition, Stephen’s experience as a design manager provides him with a comprehensive understanding of logistical, financial, and regulatory requirements, ensuring projects are executed to the highest standards.

Sheng Shi – Senior Associate Director

Sheng Shi joined CBP Architects in August 2007 after graduating from the University of Nottingham. As a visionary and strategic Director of Design Management with over 18 years of experience in architectural design, he has led a diverse range of projects across the residential, commercial, healthcare, and conservation sectors. His expertise includes client engagement, conceptual design development, architectural and construction drawings, visual presentations, and close collaboration with project teams. Sheng’s role spans all RIBA stages, requiring a broad scope of professional knowledge and experience to successfully manage and deliver projects from inception to completion.

David Houltby – Senior Associate Director

David has over 24 years of experience in architectural design, construction technology, and historic building conservation across both public and private sectors. He holds an MA in Conservation of Historic Buildings and is an Accredited Conservationist through MCIAT, as well as a council member of IHBC Yorkshire. His portfolio includes civic and education buildings, university campuses, MOD projects, and a wide range of residential, retail, and commercial developments. As a design lead, David manages teams and coordinates projects from inception to completion, consistently delivering high-quality design solutions that meet client needs and expectations.

Kayt Cooper – Office Manager

A dedicated Office Manager with 19 years of experience overseeing administrative operations, team coordination and executive support. Proven track record in streamlining office systems and fostering a productive and positive work environment. Skilled in handling confidential matters, improving efficiency, and supporting senior leadership across departments. Known for a proactive approach, strong organisational skills and commitment to continuous improvement.
