The site is located to the north of Canning Circus, at the junction of Talbot Street, Wollaton Street and Alfreton Road. It sits adjacent to Canning Terrace and the Cemetery Gateway, a Grade II listed building designed by S. Sutton Rawlinson and constructed in 1837.

The site lies in close proximity to Nottingham city centre and backs directly onto the city cemetery. Both the site and its surroundings fall within the Canning Circus Conservation Area.

A key design challenge was accommodating an efficient extension within the constraints of the tight, triangular site. Carefully considered brick detailing plays an important role in reinforcing the local architectural character and preserving the established vernacular of the conservation area.
